Stress is a common emotion experienced by adults in their daily lives – it can be from work, surroundings, and many other personal factors. But with children, it’s a different thing. They get stressed even with the littlest things – they get irritated or agitated by it. 

As children grow and develop, they learn how to respond or act towards stress. As a parent, you should observe them closely to understand what makes them get extremely irritated and how they cope with stressful circumstances. Childhood stress is usually caused due to absence of a conducive growing environment, however, it can also be caused by various other factors. To prevent this, stress-relieving toys and sensory items for children can help a great deal for them to learn to manage stress while growing up.

How to know if your child is experiencing stress?

According to experts,  babies develop emotions like fear, sadness, and joy from 3-5 months. And by turning a year older, they develop reactions and responses towards these feelings which you should observe closely, early signs of childhood stress. Some of the signs of early childhood stress are:

  • Loss of Appetite & Digestive Issues

If you notice that your child doesn’t have any appetite at all, no matter how deliciously you prepare their meals, it’s already a sign of stress. It’s not a matter of preference or change of taste palettes. Beside this, frequent stomach-aches and irregular bowel movements is also a factor which indicates stress in a child.

  • Often Headaches

They complain of experiencing headaches all the time, even if they don’t do much all day. It would help to be careful about not giving a child medicines frequently for the slightest health issue (unless prescribed otherwise) as at a young age, a child might get used to this.

  • Sleep Deprivation

Difficulty in sleeping, changes in sleeping patterns and habits, and even having frequent nightmares are factors that indicate mental discomfort and stress in children.

  • Frequent Bedwetting

Bedwetting is a common habit of children, but if it’s done multiple times, there may be a problem in your child’s way of handling emotions that needs your attention.

As a parent, how can you provide a stress-free environment for your child?

As mentioned earlier, to reduce the stress that your child is currently experiencing, you need to provide a conducive, child-friendly environment for them. This includes all the necessities that they need and emotional support as well. To help them be occupied and still calm, here are things you should consider buying:

  • Interactive Toys

For your children to stay entertained while feeling calm and occupied, it’s best to consider buying them calming games and toys such as chew products, fidget, and sensory items for children. It has several benefits to calm your child, but it also helps in brain development and avoids mannerisms such as nail chipping, lip biting, and many more.

  • Books & Informational Flashcards

To initiate more cognitive development for your child, engaging them on informational books and flashcards is a great idea. However, it is advisable to let them freely explore and choose which book or flashcard set they would like since that would appeal more to their interest in the long run. 

  • Plushies

Giving them a comfortable place to sleep is vital for their growth. So, it is best to buy hypoallergenic linens, pillow covers, blankets, and cuddle buddies to help them improve their sleeping patterns.
